Manufacturers and suppliers of consumer electronics and household appliances need to deal with an avalanche of legislation due to the high regulation of this market and enforcement. They need to comply with regulations no only impacting electrical product safety and EMC in general but also need to comply with energy efficiency, hazardous substances, and waste control programs (WEEE) regulations. Manufacturers must aware all of these regulations from R&D stage, and make sure product compliant before reach the market.
When manufacturers of Hazardous locations equipment consider distribution to global countries other than the USA and Canada, it’s important to understand the advantages of compliance with the EU ATEX Directive and International IECEx Scheme. Depends on countries, both the Ex TRs can be used as a basis for issuing national certifications. ATEX is a regional scheme (EU only), it is also accepted in some other countries as a basis for issuing the national certification. IECEx is an international certification scheme, while it’s not yet widely accepted (currently Australia, New Zealand and Singapore only), the IEC ExTR is accepted by all ExCBs within member countries as a basis for issuing national certification for that member country.
Almost all countries regulate wireless/radio apparatus (intentional transmitter) and telecom equipment (terminal equipment which connects directly to the public switched telephone network) through licensing, type approval, and/or homologation certification before allowing such equipment to enter its market. We recommend the manufacturer utilize pre-certified module and comply with EU RED and/or USA FCC regulation as a foundation before considering for global market access.
